Description
Item Description:"Japan has always been a mystery rolled into a conundrum for the West, but it has also been difficult to understand for other Asians despite many of the common cultural and religious traditions, and continues to be so. Attempting to unfurl this mystery from a Buddhist standpoint, for those on the outside looking in, is the first goal of Volume I of this two-volume work. The second goal, for those on the inside looking out, is to propose the role of Buddhism, specifically a Socially Engaged Buddhism, as an essential part of post-modern Japanese society in the new millennium that can reconcile its unique culture with the challenge of finding its role within the greater civilizational order of Asia and the wider global system. This latter goal will be presented in two parts. The second half of Volume I comprises a history of Socially Engaged Buddhism in Japan in the modern era since the advent of the Meiji era. Volume II comprises five case studies presenting new areas of dynamic Socially Engaged Buddhist activism that have emerged in the 21st century."--
